A synthetic form is used as a drug to treat hypocalcemia, bone disease caused by renal failure, and, in topical preparations, psoriasis. The main adaptation through which women meet the calcium demands of pregnancy is by the doubling of their intestinal calcium absorption driven by -- not just controls the oestrogen content in a woman, but many other genes that are involved in embryo implantation,' explained Dr Nazareth.
Triiodothyronine (T ) can be considered a calciotropic hormone insofar as its direct actions on bone. kidney and intestine resemble those of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol). Similar to the steroid hormone, T has been shown to stimulate osteoclastic bone resorption in cultured rodent bone (Mundy and Raisz1979 Klaushofer et al. 1989), to enhance renal tubular absorption of Pi (Espinosa 1984) and to increase Na , though it has no effect by itself on intestinal calcium absorption, nevertheless influences calcium uptake from the intestinal lumen considerably through potentiation of the genomic effect of calcitriol on the calcium absorptive mechanism (Cross and Peterlik 1988). In this study we extend this observation by showing that T is able to modulate the stage-specific induction of calcium transport by calcitriol in embryonic small intestine. Thereby, the thyroid hormone increases the sensitivity of enterocytes to the action of the sterol. A similar pattern of interaction of the two hormones was seen when their combined effects on osteoclastic bone resorption were evaluated in cultured neonatal mouse calvaria. We therefore propose that thyroid hormones are involved in the homeostatic control of calcium metabolism by potentiating the effects of calcilriol in its classic target organs, intestine and bone.
